Part 1: Book ClothThe blog has been neglected to the extent that when I came to update it, I couldn't find it! Google has moved ahead with so many changes it's hard to get back in with an occasional entry. I somehow stumbled on the right password. And have learned the lesson that I need to update this more than every 6 months!

In late October 2015 I took a workshop given by Martha Cole,
where I learned some techniques for making book cloth: starting with a layer of
fabric, additional layers of paper and thread are collaged on with a mix of wheat paste and
acrylic medium to form a waterproof yet flexible “fabric” .

Here are some sample books using sheets of book cloth I made

It's been difficult to settle into any kind of groove, and some exploration of half-baked ideas went nowhere.
So I went back to basics and revisited my interest in collagraph techniques. I also did some more exploration of digital printing on fabric.

Meanwhile, The Edge of the Forest travelling show is working its way across Canada. It's currently in Newfoundland, then heads west in 2016. Details at edgeoftheforest.ca.
Contributions to good causes are always a fun challenge. The Bruce County Public Library does an annual "Reel Art" competition. Artists purchase a pre-cut wood fish form, decorate it and then return it to the Library to be juried and then auctioned. Entry fees and proceeds from the auction help fund the distribution of early literacy kits for each baby born in the county. As I was focusing on collagraph, I made 2 print plates from my fish. I used a mix of plaster and acrylic medium to create the plates. After pulling off a series of prints from the plates, I touched up the residual ink left on the plates, added some silver and gold leaf, sealed everything with varathane, and voila: GoldFish and SilverFish!
Some of the prints I pulled from these plates had various flaws, so I didn't want to keep them for future framing. Instead I cut them out and glued them front and back to foam core, then strung them on a fish creel ($5.00 at Canadian Tire). They are now hanging in my sun-room.

Back to printing. Here's the result of some tests of digital printing on fabric, using different digital grounds and various colour manipulations via Photoshop CS5. It will turn into a small quilted hanging that points me in the direction of more layered and nuanced photo/fabric manipulations. Stay tuned...

Hard to believe that my last post was March 2014. Catch-up is overdue. 2014 was busy and productive. My work appeared in 2 publications.

I was honored to have one of my books selected by Lark Books for Volume 2 of its 500 Handmade Books series. Although this was published in September 2013, I didn't receive my copy until early in the New Year. My "Grand Canyon" book is on page 120.

In September, I was one of 30 local artists and fine craft makers to be featured in "Back Road Craft, Fine Craft in Grey and Bruce Counties." Each artist in this publication had 4 pages devoted to outstanding photographs of their studio and process, along with explanatory text. Here are a few pictures taken by photographer Becky Comber.

Much of my time in 2014 was spent completing the big quilt/book project referenced in previous posts. Six quilts and six artists books (each in an edition of 3) were finally completed. "Comfort/Discomfort" was shown at the Durham Art Gallery from September 13 to November 9, 2014 as part of a show entitled Adaptation, I shared the large gallery space with Iriz Paabo, whose approach to the quilt form certainly differs from mine, but our selection of work complemented each other beautifully. I'm proud to report that the show was well attended and generated many thoughtful and appreciative comments. And I must acknowledge the funding support of the Ontario Arts Council, an agency of the Government of Ontario. The project would not have been completed without that support.

While I mull over how I want the final quilt/book to look like, I'm submitting display proposals hither and yon. And displaying at local venues: last November on The Wall in Walkerton and tomorrow in Port Elgin at the International Women's Day celebration.
“How to Mend a Barn” documents these images. I had first re-imagined the old barns in textile form. I made an art quilt using found and recycled
materials to honour the barn mending process. I then
photographed the quilt, and used the
series of patchwork images in the book. The text is a poem written by my husband in the voice of
one of those resourceful barn menders.

What a great start to 2013! I've been awarded an Ontario Arts Council Grant to complete a series of quilts and book art on the domestic violence theme. First in the series is "Blood and Roses:, already written about in previous posts. The second quilt and book, which explore the reality that domestic abuse happens in every neighbourhood, are well on the way to completion. Here are a few early glimpses:
I showed some of my stitched encaustic pieces in a group show in October and received a lot of encouragement to continue in this direction. So I designed covers for a unique hand made book of my husband's long narrative poem about Theseus and the Minotaur. From there I created some other mythic pieces. I used cotton muslin that had been variously dyed in compost, rust or onion skins, and added inkjet printed imagery, some of which was then stitched or embellished with copper wire, metallic thread or upholstery thread. The pieces were finished with encaustic medium. The Atalanta pieces included collaged elements. Frames were made out of birch wood boxes, painted and sealed.

While planning a fabric piece called "Mended Barns" (more about this in another post) I started researching how I might capture the distinctive rusty patterns that develop in steel roofs and siding. There are numerous online resources on rust dyeing, but I found Kimberley Baxter Packwood's website and e-book most informative.

The move from rail to road transportation has meant the demise of the railroad. Many have been converted to walking and biking trails. Over the years I've walked a rail trail near my home, every time finding some rusted treasure: bolts and spikes and all kinds of metal objects that held the rail lines together. I have a big bucket of lovely rusty objects. I must have known that I'd find a use for them one day.
We arrived in the city mid afternoon on the Friday and, after checking in to our hotel, walked across Rittenhouse Square to the Philadelphia Art Alliance, which provides a lovely venue for exhibiting contemporary crafts and design. It is housed in the historic Wetherill Mansion, a stunning building that dates from 1906 and has retained many of its original architectural features. It’s atmosphere is reminiscent of the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto.

The main exhibition, “A sense of Place”, presents 8 female artists who explore the theme of location using materials ranging from cloth made of tree bark to expired credit cards. Each work is connected in a physical or metaphorical way to a specific locale. Wendeanne Ke’aka Stitt works in traditional Hawaiian kapi cloth made from tree bark. At the other end of the scale Amy Orr uses post consumer waste to create 3 dimensional works.
I was particularly impressed with Barbara Lee Smith’s work. She uses stitch as a drawing tool, fusing layer upon layer of synthetic fabric with machine embroidery, creating lush rich landscapes.
Downstairs, although not a formal part of the FiberPhiladelphia show, Sandra Sherman’s “Found Subjects” was very appealing. As a book artist, I appreciated the way she works with the concept of the book as a place of concealment.
The final textile show at this space was the psychologist Andrea Donelly’s weavings. “Binary” consisted of beautiful semi-transparent hangings of woven materials that incorporated inkblots – all the images are left open to the viewer to interpret.

Next stop : the Galleries at the Moore School of Art and Design, where several FiberPhiladelphia shows were opening. We missed the opening ceremonies and lecture but arrived in time to enjoy some refreshments and tour the shows .
Two of the shows were standouts for me: Doing Time/ Depth of Surface is an incredibly moving mixed media work based on two artists’ residency at the derelict Holmesburg Prison.
The other show at the Moore that blew me away was Shizuko Kimura’s show in the Graham Gallery. That was a lot to pack into a late afternoon/evening. We repaired to Cichetteria19, off Rittenhouse Square for a wonderful organic, locally sourced meal in the Venetian style. If I’m ever in Philadelphia again I’ll definitely return to this restaurant.

We spent much of Saturday being tourists – we saw the Liberty Bell , Independence Hall, then visited the Edgar Allen Poe Historic site ( my husband is a big Poe afficianado) where I photographed some of the old plaster walls that struck me with their beautiful textures and took me back to the images evoked by the “Doing Time” exhibition.
The show at the Icebox was almost everything I had hoped it would be; not just because I had a piece chosen for display, but because it’s a fabulous space. The diversity of peices selected in this juried show must have presented a huge challenge to the jurors and curator, but the show was well designed and displayed. It was uncrowded,so every peice had room to” breathe” and shine. I love spacious, uncluttered shows like this and congratulate Bruce Hoffman and his team for filling the Icebox so magnificently. My one disappointment was that there were no formalities or introductions made at this opening – at least while I was there. So I missed the opportunity to identify and connect with other artists, which is a pity.
I mentioned the diversity of offerings at this show. It’s totally a matter of personal preference, but I was pleased to see that an empasis on line and the exploration of figurative, representational work is maintaining a foothold amongst the more abstract or conceptual work. However, no matter the approach taken by the artists, I was consistently impressed by the high level of technical expertise shown, whether in exquisite stitching , weaving, dying and painting or dazzling digital applications. And the use of found and recycled materials and encaustic was a good reminder of how we can combine new approaches with time honoured techniques.
Not only was Philadelphia hosting more fascinating textile related shows than we could possibly see in a short weekend, but also the Philadelphia Museum of Art was exhibiting a Van Gogh blockbuster. We were fortunate to acquire tickets for a private viewing bright and early Sunday morning. What an opportunity to get up close to these fabulous, priceless paintings without having to fight crowds. We had an excellent guide who provided helpful information and insights into each group of paintings. She pointed out many examples of the artist’s technical mastery as well as showing how his work reflected events in his life and his multiple medical problems .

The tour provided a powerful reminder of the key to Van Gogh’s greatness : his understanding of colour theory, always balancing complementary colours in a limited yet vibrant palette.
This reminder brought my thoughts back to the question that always troubles fibre and textile artists. Is what I do art or craft? After this weekend, my conviction remains that it’s always art if its done with a high level of skill and if it observes the fundamentals of composition , form and colour. Or if the rules are broken it’s done knowingly and knowledgeably.

But it’s an endless debate....
After wandering the Philadelphia Art Museum’s American contemporary and European collections we headed over to the Perlman Institute for “Secret Garden”. This provided a nice restrospective of pre-digital fabric printing and dying by some giants in the field like Lenore Tawney and Sheila Hicks.
Although I didn’t get to see each and every one of the Fibre Philadelphia shows I believe we saw a good representative sample. Some of the exhibits can be found online at www.fiberphiladelphia.org There’s so much great work being done, and so much inspiration and encouragement to keep exploring the limits of any media.

I'm married to a poet. Over our years together I've been the subject and the recipient of many poems. I have just finished printing and binding them in 9 volumes. I won't reproduce the content here, but I will show you the cover art, including quotes from the poems that inspired the imagery of each cover.

Most of the cover papers for this series were made using a large collagraph plate that I printed in various colour combinations on my etching press. I use Charbonnel etching inks and Somerset paper. After printing, I cut parts of the print down to size for the covers. The scraps are saved for collage or card making.

The plate was never intended to make a full sized print: just as well as it doesn't hold together as a large piece. Additional covers were made from paper saturated with water colour. Silver and gold foil was added to some covers.

Here are some images of the collagraph plate:
Quilts evoke the warmth and comfort of home and family. Quilts represent the means by which ordinary women have expressed their creativity. Quilting was often – and still remains – a social activity that allowed women to share their stories and to support one another. This quilt challenges these perspectives. It points to the sad truth that home is not always a sanctuary, that loving relationships can turn deadly and that our social networks and institutions don’t always protect us.

I started working on this project in 2010, when I collected written information contained in the ever growing coroners inventory of women murdered by an intimate partner. I then began creating images sparked by some of the reports: a capsized canoe, a house on fire, a burning car, a crashed minivan, a suitcase by the side of the road, pill bottles, a swimming pool, a dumpster, a tractor with bucket, a bathtub....

I keep a creative notebook in which I keep technical notes and comments on the progress of my various art projects. On March 10, 2011 I wrote:

“ The crazy quilt is taking shape. I created 12 squares, each containing an appliquéd centre with an image representing the deaths of the women. Each appliqué is on a plain background of black or drab olive. Crazy patches are from a limited selection of fabrics in a generally sombre palette, with flashes of white, rust, mustard and orange. All the fabric comes from my “stash” and some are recycled e.g. from a dress I made Emma when she was a teen, a jacket of mine, a skirt of my mother’s.. Two fabrics incorporate black roses, a fitting image that I think enhances the mourning component. I have now started hand stitching text around the edge of each centre block. The stitching is in off white to give some unity to the whole and to speak to the innocence of the murdered women.”

The quilt was completed in June 2011 when I recorded my decision on the title Blood and Roses, partly as an ironic reference to the “Bread and Roses" anthem. An Art Quilt.I've been on the Board of Directors of my local women's shelter for the past 4 years. Every year we set up an installation - "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Shoes" - in various public places in the community. Pairs of shoes, each representing a woman (and sometimes her children) are displayed along with information about her situation and the manner of her death. Unfortunately every year new pairs of shoes are added to the display. Despite our best efforts, women and children continue to die at the hands of their intimate partners.

I've long been haunted by some of the images evoked in the installation and have thought long and hard about how to to present them. I won't describe the thought process here, but the concept of "a terrible beauty" led me to plan a crazy quilt. Viewed from a distance it will look like a fairly traditional quilt. Approach it and you will see embedded images that represent 12 of the women. The intent is to create something beautiful that will honour these women without glossing over the disturbing reality.

A work in progress: 12 appliqued images each in a pieced block. As this show is being held in conjunction with a showing of the movie "Waterlife" it seemed appropriate to explore the theme of the Great Lakes environment. I also wanted to inject something related to literacy. My train of thought brought me back to favourite book from my childhood: Paddle-to-the-Sea. What would he see if he retraced his route through Lake Huron in 2011?

The image inside the box is printed onto lightweight cotton canvas. Using a scanned replica antique map as a background, I added a variety of manipulated digital images representing some current Great Lakes issues: wind turbines, nuclear power development, asian carp, zebra mussels and industrial pollution. There is also an image of the late Dudley George placed near the site of his death at Ipperwash. The route that Paddle-to-the-Sea might have taken in 2011 is hand embroidered in metallic thread.

Here is the canvas, mounted in the box. The flower fairy cut-outs were photocopied from a picture book I was given years ago - David Ellwand's Cinderlily. The stage was sourced from Google images. Construction inspiration was found in Carole Barton's Pocket Paper Engineer.

Seven Gable House Arthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16980800259832771883noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5399890954550204226.post-15506085853554524242010-04-26T13:06:00.007-04:002010-04-26T13:52:17.515-04:00The latest book: as much with the river as not..."as much with the river as not" ventures further into the political and the ironic than I've previously gone. It's 6 inches by 4 and a half inches, made of hand painted Maidstone paper and bound with monofilament. The images are taken from my own photographs, manipulated in Photoshop and inkjet printed. The text includes lyrics from Van Morrison's 1974 Veedon Fleece and extracts from my community's Official Plan.

<img style="display: block; The intent was to capture important information and memories that will be available to our children and grandchildren when the time comes for them to show an interest in such things. I offered to put the memoir into book form.
Because of its length it presented planning and design challenges.
